Effective Time Management

When work, outings and social lives stop, a vista of free time opens up. Your chance for nailing the list of things to do and nurture body and soul with new pursuits.

To organise this time, you need a list of what is going to happen. It might look like this.

This is not an effective list. Now, the following will happen, for weeks.

  • Messing about in the garden
  • Funny cat videos
  • Watching a bird feeder, wondering what sparrows look like
  • Netflix
  • News
  • Naps
  • Wine
  • Sitting still
  • Thinking
  • Strolls

If you feel guilt, dig out the list, re write it and add in when things are going to happen.

Now you are well on the road to effective time management. But remember a few key points before you get going on doing it.

  1. Don’t panic and try to multitask.

‘Do yoga every day’ is not just about unrolling the matt and signing in to a class.

Stay for the whole class. The teacher won’t know if you sneak out, do something else, and only get back for the lying down bit. But it is best to understand that some things can’t get done at the same time as others.

2. Force yourself to start on things.

Start re-painting, especially the door

The key word here is start, just start. As soon as you have started you can have a nap or something.

3. Find a way to make tasks fun.

Sort under the stairs, especially the Lego

Stick the Lego out in the garden. Then you are messing about in the garden and it is not under the stairs any more, so that’s the stair area sorted.

4. Some things will get done without trying

Be creative every day

Messing about in the garden is a fine way to manage your time.
